Diabetes and Aging – How Not To Worry


Diabetes and aging are almost complementary to one another. More specifically, one is the cause and the other is the effect. Diabetes hastens aging and makes one look and feel older than his bio-age.

Diabetes is the consequence of insulin-imbalance in the body that causes blood sugar to rise abnormally in the blood stream. Beta cells in the pancreas secrete insulin and when they get out of order, insulin secretion is diminished. Insulin helps the cells in the body to draw glucose from the blood. When there’s less insulin, the cells draw less glucose, which leads to accumulation of extra glucose in the blood. This high level of blood glucose is damaging – it affects all the organs and nerves and impairs their normal functioning. Diabetes is hence a top killer.

Organ damage, increase in frequency of diseases and highly restricted lifestyle make a diabetic person age faster than a normal individual. The cells get starved of glucose and lose their vitality and capacity to repair fast and effectively. This sets in what is known as cellular aging. However, there is a way to delay the effects.

And that is about improved lifestyle. Sugar-restricted, low-fat diets rich in vegetables and not too sweet fruits, regular workouts, sufficient vitamin, minerals and anti-aging supplementation, zero smoking and controlled drinking, less tension and adequate rest can help a lot not only in reducing the effects of diabetes, but also in delaying the effects of diabetes-related aging as well as normal aging.
