Oral Health and Aging – Look Beyond Your TeethOral health and aging is not just about having a good set of teeth. Just as aging sets in a number of changes in different systems within the body, the oral cavity also undergoes a number of changes with increasing age. The most fundamental change that takes place in the body with aging is loss of immune response. This makes the body less capable to fight infections and diseases. The same thing happens with the oral cavity too. Aging causes a progressive shift in microbial habitation within the mouth from good ones to bad ones. These bad bacteria, fungus etc. are largely responsible for gum infections, tooth decay and other oral health complications. Oral health and aging problems that afflict people mostly include oral yeast infection or thrush, gum disease known as periodontal disease, tooth caries, allergic manifestations on the tongue and disturbances in the mucosal lining within the mouth. They are mainly caused by infections, blood circulation problems, vitamin and calcium deficiencies, and poor health conditions. Periodical check-up, brushing teeth with fluoride paste twice a day, regular flossing, frequent cleaning of dentures and changing them whenever necessary are some the most important suggestions to maintain good oral health. Side by side, good diets and less of sugar and fats, lots of fruits and vegetables, calcium, Vitamin B and D supplements, antioxidant supplements, probiotic formulations (good bacteria available in commercial formulations), good personal hygiene and regular exercises are must to improve overall health and well-being and fight oral health and aging problems.
