Osteoarthritis and Aging – Say Bye Bye To Joint PainsOsteoarthritis and aging are closely inter-related. Also known as degenerative arthritis, osteoarthritis is caused by the break-down and eventual loss of cartilage of one or more joints. This is the most common form of arthritis, affecting over 20 million people in the US. The hands, feet, spine and large weight-bearing joints such as the hip and the knees are mostly affected by osteoarthritis. The symptoms are inflammation, swelling, pain and immobility. Aging is the most important cause of primary osteoarthritis. The water content of the cartilage increases with aging, and the protein makeup degenerates. Ultimately, cartilage begins to disintegrate by flaking or forming tiny crevasses. In advanced cases, there is a total loss of cartilage cushion between the bones of the joints. When the worn joints are used over the years, the cartilage inflames and gives rise to swelling and pain. The aging-related decay of the cartilages cannot be stopped; however, its progression can be delayed through some steps. First and foremost, is good dieting. It is very important to have lots of protein in diet from sources such as chicken, soy, and lentils. Dairy products are helpful, as they are rich in calcium and fortify the bones, cartilages and joints. Increased intake of antioxidant and anti-aging supplements and vitamins also delay the decay significantly. The other important step is exercising. It tones up the joints and cartilages and gives them strength and flexibility. So they are able to resist age-related decay a little more.
