How Does Selenium Contribute to Anti Aging?

Selenium is an essential trace element that is found in wheat germ, whole grains, mushrooms, fresh garlic, tuna, seafood, organ meats, and brewer’s yeast. It assists in keeping the body healthy and promotes anti aging.

Without selenium, the body is unable to grow properly due to selenium’s role in protein synthesis, or the formation of protein in the body. Selenium also acts as an antioxidant which protects cells from the damages of free radicals. Free radical damage causes aging in appearance as well as in the condition of the body. A series of studies revealed that an increase in supplementary selenium each day cut the incidence of prostate cancer by 63% and lung cancer by 46%. The death rate of cancer among patients who took 200 mcg of selenium was 39% lower than statistics of the general public. Selenium is also thought to aid in heart disease prevention by increasing the good cholesterol and lowering levels of the bad cholesterol. 2001 studies also pointed toward a 50% less likelihood of developing asthma when compared to those who did not supplement selenium. Women are encouraged to use selenium to battle hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause and perimenopause.

Signs of selenium deficiency include dandruff, infertility and premature aging. Just as with everything we put in our bodies, too much selenium can have adverse affects that outweigh the benefits. The recommended minimum dose is 55 mcg, although on a long term basis, 200 mcg is well within the guidelines of safe usage. Common side effects of too much selenium are dizziness, brittle fingernails, hair loss and nausea.
